I come from a coffee-producing country. As a child, I would steal small sips from my mother’s cup, even though she strictly forbade it. The coffee was strong yet smooth — rich, aromatic, never bitter. It needed no sugar. It had character. It had meaning.
Years later, at university, coffee became my fuel. Then, as an engineer — shivering through Colorado winters and enduring the heat of the West Texas oil fields — coffee became a necessity. Each day began with an hour-long drive before sunrise. Staying alert wasn’t optional; around heavy machinery, a moment’s lapse can cost lives.
I drank a lot of coffee. But it never tasted like the coffee of my childhood. It was bitter, flat, lifeless. The bags proudly read “100% Arabica,” yet said nothing of origin — no country, no farm, no altitude. Just polished packaging and vague promises.
That absence stayed with me.
